"ATF Director Dettelbach to Resign Two Days Before Trump’s Inauguration

Steven Dettelbach, Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has announced his resignation effective January 18, 2025, two days before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. 

Dettelbach, who was confirmed as ATF Director in July 2022, submitted his resignation to President Joe Biden, aligning with the standard transition between administrations.

In his resignation letter, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the agency and highlighted achievements during his tenure, including efforts to reduce violent crime rates. 

His departure concludes a period during which the ATF implemented several significant firearm regulations, such as restrictions on pistol braces and home gun building.

 These measures received praise from gun-control advocates but faced criticism and legal challenges from gun-rights supporters. 

Gun-rights organizations, including the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), have welcomed Dettelbach's resignation. CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb stated,
